Spreading Happiness Thru Art

It all began as a child, flea market sales to earn allowance. My father was a woodworker by hobby and my mother a full-time paperboard packaging designer. Very interesting, as both of them survived my two brothers and I. I grew up a "tom-boy" having two older brothers that believed crying was only for girls and I thought I had to hang with the crowd. We grew up in the "boonies," in what seemed the middle of nowhere. East Texas town called Kemp in a community called Styx. The nearest little grocery store was at least 20-30 minute drive.  I remember my brothers and I were allowed to leave when the sun came up but  must be home by the time the sun went down. We rode the bus daily during the school year and as we got older, life became more hectic.

Dad always loves looking at flea markets for treasures. When I was small, I would work with him in his woodshop on a band saw cutting wooden toys. We would then sometimes set up at the flea market and sell our handmade wooden wares.

Opened in 1997, my parents now own their own video production company, Video-7 Production company.  I am so proud to see them accomplish their on-going dreams.

Both my "Mama" and "Daddy-o" are exceptionally brilliant and creative. The challenges as children were not to make the "A" in class but rather "to do our best, whatever it may be." I attribute my original creativity to them as they are the ones who foster my ideas no matter my age. They support all of us no matter our age.

Thanks to my two brothers & one sister, I now have one niece, Erica Jolene & a nephew, Matthew Blake and the newest addition is a niece named, Alicia JoLynn born October 2006. Family is greatly important.

My art?  Sure it's not for everyone but nothing is. I feel blessed and called to do this particular type of art work.  If you had asked me 6 years ago if I would be working with beads, I would have laughed &  told you that you were crazy. I was working with corrugated tin at the time & would have never dreamed of creating items with beads.

It all started when I saw a beautiful beaded spoon at a local festival. I couldn't remember who it was, so I created my own. One of my greatest friends, Kathy, was a cornerstone and my initial financial foundation. She supported my art by selling it at her work and to her friends. Her friends, mostly Marianne, are the ones who requested more items thus came the invention of most of what I make. In addition, many other friends such as Agnieszka, Brenda, Tracy, Julie & many more, have been inspiring & have believed in me. If not for them, I don't know where I'd be.

I feel fortunate to meet so many wonderful people in my art ventures. From the local art supply stores, the dealers that carry my collection, & the Gallery Nights, I encounter some of the most incredible people.  The energy from them is what gives me the desire to continue to create and design different pieces. All of my designs are created with friends and family in mind. When I create a piece, it seems to take on a personality of someone I know. Energy is amazing!

I am not a normal artist. My background is in  science with medical knowledge & I tend apply everything I know to science. I am actually a nurse for a large non profit hospital, John Peter Smith Hospital, in Fort Worth, Texas. I work daily with patients who have gynelogical cancer who are in the end stages of life, those who have survived cancer as well as newborn babies and their mothers. It is a refreshing experience to help those who need it the most.

After doing research on certain artists, I learned that many of them have attended college for art specifically. Other than my 8th grade art class, my only education of art comes from my environment. I do hold an Associate of Art from Navarro College, although no special art classes were taken.

From learning from my family, seeking ideas on the web, & watching inspiring craft shows to reading books, my art comes from my heart. Making people smile is my favorite thing to do.

I want to personally thank you for stopping by. Please continue to visit throughout the year. I enjoy the energy that comes from people like you.

I hope you are creative in giving, loving and in anything you do, do your best.

Have a wonderful day and a full-filling life.

Love,

Sara
